The Blackouts From Space: Before and After Views

Pictures taken by NASA's Suomi NPP Satellite on October 21st and November 1st show the extent of power outage in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

You'll want to click through to a more zoomed-in state in order to compare these before- and after-Sandy shots of the Eastern Seaboard's lights at night. Up close, you'll be able to see a dimmer Jersey seashore, a fainter northern New Jersey, and, most strikingly, a black hole where the southern reaches of Manhattan used to be. The pictures were taken by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite on board NASA's Suomi NPP Satellite, one of the crucial satellites for collecting the data that enables us to forecast major storms like Sandy.
