At a speech she delivered to the National Auto Dealers Association Convention in New Orleans this morning, Hillary Clinton made a confession that was slightly ironic, given the setting: She no longer drives cars. In fact, she has not driven a car since 1996.
This makes, of course, some sense. Clinton, as a former First Lady/U.S. senator/Secretary of State/etc./etc., doesn't travel so much as get transported. Her status as a politician, as a celebrity, and as a generally Important Person means that she also has a different relationship with the technologies that give shape to us normals' daily lives. In the same way that President Obama has been prevented from having an iPhone or former head of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, doesn't use email, Clinton, it seems, has been prevented from having a car.
Which is not a big deal. But her admission is today's reminder that, while celebrities may sometimes buy groceries and get Starbucks and whatnot, they are not in all ways "just like us."
