Hurricane Isaac at Night

The powerful storm in the moonlight, before it hit New Orleans.

Just after midnight on August 28, NASA's Suomi-NPP satellite acquired this image of then-Tropical Storm Isaac, which has since become a hurricane. The satellite's Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite's "day-night band" can capture light in wavelengths ranging from green to near-infrared. At night from above, as in this picture, Isaac's clouds are lit by moonlight. Below, the same image, adjusted and with a few geographic labels.
